SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS AND WOMEN’S RIGHTS, NORTHERN GHANA

Project Summary

With your help, by 2010 African Initiatives would have achieved the following in northern Ghana:

100,000 farmers implementing low environmental impact, cost efficient, sustainable agriculture and improved food security

A reduction in domestic violence and female genital mutilation, an increase in family planning and awareness of Aids, and an increase of the economic security of women

A network of farmers’ organisations representing their needs, advocating for their rights, improving governance and influencing government policy that affects them.

Background

Northern Ghana seems to be defined by its climate - hot and dry with only 6 weeks of unpredictable rain in the year. The region scores lowly on all indicators of poverty; child mortality, girls in school, malnutrition, access to clean water, inward investment, infrastructure development, income, intermittent ethnic conflict, and political representation.

This requires an integrated approach to community, the environment and agriculture to maximise the resources it has. Primarily a rural, subsistence farmer based economy, human and natural resources have to be harnessed if communities are to live in such hostile environments.

We are actively seeking financial support to fund this three year project - 2008 to 2010
